Mission Complete! Google Has Taken Over The Globe.
Many people have commented that there seems to be an ultimate struggle for world information technology dominance between a few major players. One of the dominant forces in that struggle is Google. You could argue that Google’s ever expanding market has enabled them to be the current "king-of-the-hill".
Well, now they own the globe. On the news site Ars Technica, I came across a story about the Open Geospatial Consortium’s (OGC) announcement that it has accepted Google’s KML, an XML-based system, as the standard for the annotation of geospatial data.
What does that really mean?
Well, it means that other companies will need to adhere to Google’s standard way of storing data for maps. Essentially, the way that Google stores information for Google Maps and Google Earth are now the standard way of doing things.
Who cares?
Google. By having their system accepted as a standard, they ensure that the time and effort that they have put into their products will pay off by having those products more readily accepted in the marketplace.
